Water Quality and Quantity Addendum - Draft

Mission

To support the Appropriate Technology Study Group with the necessary technical data about the Kolwan Valley’s hydrological cycle to allow the team to make well-informed recommendations for future projects. This assessment will include information from both the geology of the region and how the inhabitants use the water.

Methods of obtaining data

Government surveys

  • Surface water assessments
  • Ground water assessments
  • River flow data
  • Climactic data (rain, Tmax, Tmin, etc.)

Previous data collected by NGOs and MUWCI

  • Water quality testing testing if it can be found

Coordinated testing by WDA and MUWCI members at water sources

  • pH
  • Hard metals (including total phosphate/nitrate)
  • Fecal coliform
  • Turbidity
  • Dissolved oxygen

Goals

Partial list of intended outcomes:

  • Determine the quality of water at source for household use and answer basic question of “is it safe to drink?”
  • Assess the quantity of water available for region, and how the region’s impact
  • Answer how the water tables have dropped over time
  • Geographic locations of primary sources for drinking water

Sub-report outline

The sub-report including in the findings of the ATSG will detail:

  • An overview of the water quantity, water quality, and climatic data for the Kolwan Valley
  • Define standards of assessment
  • Explanation of the surface water data and an assessment of demand of the sources
  • Explanation of ground water data and an assessment of the demands on sources
  • Explanation of climatic data
  • Review of the data trends and how they might apply in the future
  • Report and assess water quality data
  • Review Data collection methods and suggest improvements
