Daniel Bachhuber [email | posts] is an undeclared sophomore at the University of Oregon and Lane Community College. On days he’s feeling particularly ambitious, Daniel enjoys photographing, adventure travel, and conspiring on ways to make a better world. Lazier days might find him taking advantage of everything the Great Northwest has to offer including, but not limited to, skiing, climbing, running, and kayaking. At this point in Daniel’s life, he aspires to be a pilot and fly for a living; given his track record, however, he’ll probably end up doing everything but that.
Joseph Bornstein [email | posts] is a senior philosophy major at Whitman College. One of the original co-founders of Whitman Direct Action, Joe is passionate about environmental justice and intends to make a career out of helping the world. His work with WDA helped him become a 2007 Truman Scholar and is applying to graduate programs specializing in public management and environmental sciences. Outside of Joe’s earth-changing pursuits, he enjoys hiking, walking, swimming, rafting, and soccer, as well as conversing and writing.
Jessie Conrad [email | posts] is a junior this year at Whitman College studying Environmental Humanities. Growing up in Whitefish, Montana provided her the opportunity to grow within nature, which also laid the foundation for her interest in the philosophy of the environmental movement. Her involvement with WDA has allowed her to expand upon her interest in environment-based human rights issues, and learn how to be an active member of a dynamic, student-based organization. Aside from her studies, Jessie finds herself drawing, either nordic or telemark skiing, or racing bicycles.
Yukta Kumar [email] is a student of political science at Whitman. She has energy like no one else. She laughs and the world laughs with her. When she finishes her schooling, Yukta plans to pursue a career of social work specialising in global migrant and refugee communities. She considers herself a global nomad who lives life on the move.
John Loranger [email | posts] is a freshman at Whitman College who enjoys traveling and making a difference. Born in Anchorage, Alaska, he has lived all over the place including Arizona, Texas, and in Virginia right outside of Washington, D.C. John is currently an undecided on paper, but he’s pretty sure his major will be either History, English, or Politics. At Whitman, John is also involved in student government and other volunteer organizations like the Mentoring Program and the Story Time Project. After graduation he wants to travel, go to graduate school, and continue living the dream.

Melissa Rhodes [email] is a first-year student at Whitman College who enjoys studying most subjects, but is especially interested in philosophy and religion. Melissa grew up in Kansas City, Missouri where she had the pleasure of befriending a few unique and inspiring individuals who continue to contribute to her passion for community service. When she is not in the library, Melissa enjoys writing, hearing and creating music, and speaking Spanish. She looks forward to a future of travel and adventure.
Tim Shadix [email | posts] is a junior politics major from Ashland, Oregon. He has been involved in activism and community service since high school, with a particular interest in environmental conservation and social justice issues arising from globalization and development. In his free time, Tim tries to play the guitar, hikes, plays tennis and pretends to be a connoisseur of the cinematic arts. After Whitman, he hopes to travel freely before returning to the classroom in pursuit of a career in sustainable development NGO work.
Jyotsna Shivanandan [email | posts] is a senior Politics major at Whitman College. After being struck by the raw idealism to be an “agent of change” while attending the Mahindra United World College of India, Jyotsna has been passionate about working for human rights issues. She has taken a keen interest in fighting poverty through the means of microfinance and in the repatriation of refugees and asylum seekers. So far, she has been fortunate enough to address these issues in countries such as Kenya, Uganda and Egypt. Having grown up in Mumbai, India Jyotsna loves the sights and sounds of bustling city life. She enjoys experimenting while cooking, traveling off the conventional path, and reading almost anything that comes her way.
